In primitive cultures man’s struggle for food consumes most of his time, thought, and energy .the creation of surplus of food over and above what is needed to live leads to successive refinements in the subdivision of labor, which on turn make possible social and technical advances and thus the production of even greater quantities of food.

For millennia the food supply was a major factor limiting the growth of human populations and determining their density in any particular area .It is only in the last century those improvements in agricultural production have become sufficiently widespread to remove food as the limiting factor in most population growth. In combination with improved control and prevention of infectious and other diseases, an exponential increase in numbers of people has been the result.

Pressure for good agricultural land for the production of food has been major a major factor in the turbulent warfare of the historical record crop failures have resulted in population losses through death and emigration, which have impoverished and impede bed the social and economic development of populations and even whole countries.

For example, Ireland has never recovered from the high loss of starvation and emigration as direct consequences of the potato famine of the 1840; the political history of United States and Canada has been equally changed by hundreds of thousands of Irish immigrants. Another example of the importance of food problems is found in the major political and economic consequences of the failure of agricultural production in the communist countries.

Why Low Food Production is a World Problem?
Low per capita food production and high rates of population growth in underdeveloped areas cause food shortage in many less developed countries, particularly in tropical and semi tropical regions. Even though 60 to 80 percent of the people in these countries are of engaged in farming, there productivity is so low that it does not meets the needs of the population. By contrast in some industrialized countries less than 8% of the population is engaged in an agricultural industry that produces vast surpluses. Although these surpluses help to meet the needs of many other parts of the world, malnutrition is widespread and persistent in the underdeveloped areas and is responsible for much of the high morality in these areas, whether by itself or in a combination with infections of various types.

Factors limiting adequate food production are primarily social and economic rather than physical. The lack of knowledge and the illiteracy of the rural population complicate attempts to increase food production as well as to control population in underdeveloped countries. Long standing customs, limited agriculture training activities, and inadequate storage and distribution facilities help to perpetuate low agricultural production these areas. Lack of the tools of scientific agriculture and security of money or credit for their purchase are major additional factors. Moreover, this in adequacy of the food supply is part of a vicious circle that keeps productivity low: malnourished populations are more vulnerable to disease and less capable of sustained work than are well nourished populations.

Continued increases in food productions can be anticipated in most of less developed countries although in many in many areas they will not be large enough to maintain adequate per capita food supplies. The additional food necessary to give at least a subsistence ration to most persons is likely to continue to come from the food surpluses of the induustrarialized countries and to be augmented by the exploitation of new protein sources.

Countries Where Malnutrition Is A Severe Problem
Good nutrition is the cornerstone for survival, health and development for current and succeeding generations. Well-nourished children perform better in school, grow into healthy adults and in turn give their children a better start in life. Well-nourished women face fewer risks during pregnancy and childbirth, and their children set off on firmer developmental paths, both physically and mentally.

Malnutrition is implicated in more than half of all child deaths worldwide. Malnourished children have lowered resistance to infection; they are more likely to die from common childhood ailments like diarrhea diseases and respiratory infections, and for those who survive, frequent illness saps their nutritional status, locking them into a vicious cycle of recurring sickness and faltering growth. Their plight is largely invisible: three quarters of the children who die from causes related to malnutrition were only mildly or moderately undernourished, showing no outward sign of their vulnerability.

Poverty, low levels of education, and poor access to health services are major contributors to childhood malnutrition, a complex issue that requires tackling on a wide number of fronts. To name only a few:
* Ensuring food security for poor households, both enough food and the right kinds of food;
* Educating families to understand the special nutritional needs of young children, notably the value of breastfeeding and the importance of introducing suitable complementary foods at the right age;
* Protecting children from infections, by such measures as immunization against common childhood diseases and provision of safe water and sanitation;
* Ensuring that children receive quality care when they fall ill;
* Shielding them from the micronutrient deficiencies that can bring death and disability, especially iodine, iron and vitamin A deficiencies;
* Paying special attention to the nutritional needs of girls and women, since chronically undernourished women tend to bear low-birthweight babies and so perpetuate the vicious cycle of malnutrition into the next generation.

Progress to Date:
Overall, significant progress has been made in the reduction of child malnutrition, with underweight prevalence declining from 33 to 28 % in the developing world as a whole. The largest decline was achieved in East Asia and the Pacific where underweight levels decreased by a third (from 25% to 17%). This regional decline is driven primarily by improvements in China, where underweight prevalence declined by nearly 50% during the 1990s. However, underweight prevalence for other countries in the region did not decline at the same level. Substantial improvements were also made in the Latin America and the Caribbean region where rates fell from 11% to 7%, although overall levels were already relatively low to begin with. South Asia also experienced declines over the decade (from 53% to 47%), however, the region continues to suffer from staggeringly high levels of child malnutrition with close to half of all under five children being underweight. The underweight prevalence rates for the Middle East and North Africa region remained roughly the same. Similarly, in Sub-Saharan Africa there has been little or no change over the decade and nearly a third of all under fives remain underweight.

Similarly, in Sub-Saharan Africa there has been little or no change over the decade and nearly a third of all under fives remain underweight.

The number of malnourished children in the developing world declined from around 180 million at the beginning of the decade to 155 million at the end of the decade. Half of all malnourished children live in South Asia and more than one fifth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The actual number of malnourished children in Sub-Saharan Africa has increased over the decade, partly due to the lack of progress and the increase in overall population size. It is worth noting that only three countries, India, China and Bangladesh, make up half of all malnourished children in the developing world.

The underlying causes of malnutrition in many Asian countries include poverty, the low status of women, poor care during pregnancy, high rates of low birth weight, high population densities, unfavorable child caring practices, and poor access to health care. In sub-Saharan Africa, extreme poverty, inadequate caring practices, low levels of education and poor access to health services are among the major factors. Conflicts and natural disasters in many countries have further exacerbated the situation. The increase in the number of malnourished children in Africa also reflects a rapid rate of population growth. In many countries in Africa, the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, particularly in the second half of the decade, have reversed some of the gains made in the decade’s early years.

Disparities
The available data, particularly those from MICS and DHS surveys, also allow for the analysis of disparities within the population.
Data from 113 countries show that there is very little difference between boys and girls with respect to underweight prevalence. South Asia is the only region with higher underweight levels among girls than among boys. In most other regions, boys are at a slight disadvantage or no difference is found with respect to underweight prevalence by gender.
By contrast, the urban-rural differentials do show significant differences. On average, the underweight prevalence rates are more than one and a half times higher in rural areas than in urban areas.

Effects Of Malnutrition
The most common severe nutritional deficiencies are those of protein and vitamin A. The best indicator of the prevalence of protein and deficiency [kwashiorkor] is the mortality rate for children one to five years of age, which commonly 20 to 50 times higher in underdeveloped countries than areas like western Europe , the united states ,Australia ,new zeland and Japan. Infant morality rates [deaths of children less than one year of age] are two to four times higher in less developed countries than in those that are industrialized. Early weaning with improper substitutes and inadequate supplementation of breast milk are important factor in morality rates for infants who survive the dangerous first months of life.[1]

Vitamin A deficiency is also most common among preschool children; it causes severe eye lesions which often result in blindness .In Indonesia and other countries of Southeast Asia, deaths from secondary infection are particularly common in children with vitamin A deficiency. The deficiency could be readily prevented by the green and yellow vegetables that are, or could be widely available in most countries. (1)

Another common problem – marasmus or partial starvation is seen most often among infants who have been prematurely weaned and fed watery gruels that are deficient in both calories and protein. A form of acute thiamine deficiency [infantile beriberi] is a cause of death among nursing infants in some south Asian countries, where a polished rice diet results in thiamine [vitamin B] deficiency in mothers. Beriberi also still occurs among many adults in these areas. Pellagra, caused by inadequate niacin and tryptophan intake, is seen in those populations of Africa.

Women experiencing repeated cycles of pregnancy and lactation are likely to develop iron deficiency anemia, loss of bone calcium, and reduced lean body mass. Malnutrition in other adults is less common, except in times of famine, although individuals unable to obtain work may be seriously undernourished because they cannot afford to buy adequate food. Alcoholism is a common cause of malnutrition in both under developed and industrialized countries because money is spent on alcohol rather than on proper food.

Right to Food: An Instance of Human Right
There is no doubt that without food no life is possible and therefore right to food is an aspect of right to life. It is necessary to find out its legal status or what kind statutory recognition is there.

Initial Recognition: Non-Justifiable Right
First time in history right to food was expressly guaranteed as human right in UDHR-1948 under Article 25. It has been provided that everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well being of himself and of his family, including food…. As it was mere declaration, this right was not enforceable.
Later on this right was adopted in the International Convention on Economic and Social Rights, which provided under Article 11 paragraph 2 ‘the right of everyone to be free from hunger as a fundamental right’. Again, as rights guaranteed under this covenant are subject to ratification realized immediately.
In India also the right is not expressly provided under the Constitution, the only relevant provisions are Article 47 of the Constitution which provide that it is the duty of the state to raise the level of nutrition… and article 48 provide for planning of agricultural and animal husbandry. But these rights are guaranteed under Part IV of constitution and therefore in pertaining to that it was characterized as a non-justifiable right.

Non-Enumerated Fundamental Right: Outcome of judicial activism.
First time in Indian history the Supreme Court recognized Right to Food as Right to Life. In a significant judgment of the PUCL Vs. Union of India [2000(s)SC ALE] Supreme Court held that it right of every person who is starving because of his or her inability to purchase food grains have right to get food under Article 21. It is the duty of state to provide such persons food grains particularly from stock, which is lying with state as unused. And more particularly food grains be provided to all those who are aged, infirm, disabled, destitute women and men, pregnant and lactating women and destitute children and therefore court directed to all states to distribute food grains immediately through PDS shops.

The definition of human rights is provided under Section 2(d) of protection of Human Rights Act 1993, in the light of this definition and after above decision the legal status of Right to Food has been transformed from non-justifiable right to justifiable right. It can be described as non-enumerated but enforceable fundamental right. Right to food means adequate food, essential for descent standard of life, food free from adulteration.

Right to Food: International Perspectives
‘Human Rights’ is a universal phenomenon therefore Right to food has to be seen from international perspectives, and as it is recognized on international level expressly in many documents/ instruments quite early.

UDHR-1948
The UDHR provides under Article 25 paragraph (1) that, everyone has the right to standard of living adequate for the health and well being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. It is expressly provided first time on international level. The right is not absolute; it is an aspect of Right to health, right to livelihood. Persons are entitled only in above-mentioned circumstances.

ICESCR-1966
Article 11 paragraph (2) of the covenant recognized the right of everyone to be free from hunger as a fundamental right.
The paragraph (2) of the same article also provides measure to be adopted individually or collectively by states to achieve above-mentioned object. In particular to improve methods of production, conservation and distribution of food by making full use of technical and scientific knowledge, by disseminating knowledge of the principles of nutrition and by developing or reforming agrarian system in such a way so as to achieve the most efficient development and utilization of natural resources. Further to ensure on equitable distribution of world food supplies in relation to need by taking into account the problems of both food importing and food exporting countries.

UN World Food Conference: 1974
It was convened at Rome from 5th to 6th November1974. In that Conference 22 resolutions were adopted and Universal Declaration on the Eradication of Hunger and Malnutrition was also made. In the preamble of the Declaration it was stated that gravity of problem is more in developing countries. The object was enunciated as elimination of hunger and malnutrition. The causes had been mentioned and also their historical circumstances, especially social inequalities, including in many cases alien and colonial domination, foreign occupation, racial discrimination, apartheid and neo-colonialism in all its forms which continue to be among the greatest obstacles to the full emancipation and progress of the developing countries and all the people involved.
Three Propositions made:
1. Equal right of all persons
2. Adequate resources
3. A common problem in all countries

Food and Agriculture Organization:
One of the objects of FAO of the United Nations is the elimination of hunger and malnutrition and to attain this object FAO has started following actions for ensuring food security:
• International undertaking on world food security of 1974.
• The plan of action on world security of 1979.
• The agenda for consultations and possible action to deal with acute and large-scale food shortages 1981.
• The world food security compact of 1985.
These all are instances of international agreements. These agreements have been entered upon by different states to achieve above purpose laid down.

World Food Programme
It is a joint programme of the United Nations and FAO. Initially it was designed on experimental basis for three years, but later on in 1965 its term was extended and it was made operational continuously for as long as multilateral food aid remained feasible and desirable. The aim of WFP is to provide food aid to support development projects and to meet emergency needs. The Economic Council and the General Assembly review the operation of the programme annually.

Beijing Declaration of the World Food Council-
The World Food Council adopted the Beijing Declaration in June 1987. The member states have resolved to join together and in our united strength and interest to eliminate the scourge of hunger forever. The World Food Day is observed on 16th October every year, it was decided by FAO in the year 1979 unanimously.

People have different expectations about their favorite vacation destination. Some want to see the architectural buildings, others like to walk in the mountains or in the beauty of the nature and others like a beach vacation. No matter which kind of travel you prefer, delicious food is always important on your vacation destination.

Here are some summer travel destinations where you can expect great and delicious food and it’s maybe one of the main reasons to choose for a vacation in one of these countries:

1. Italy

Italy is a popular travel destination for several reasons. Most everyone loves pasta and you can’t find one place on earth where you can eat better pasta than in Italy. Pasta is served with almost every meal and it is often the first dish of your Italian meal. Spaghetti al pomodore (spaghetti with tomato sauce) is one of the most popular pastas in this country but you will be amazed how many different kinds of pastas you can find.

The Italian restaurants offer you plenty of different kinds of pastas and composed with different ingredients and also typical Italian herbs. Spaghetti with seafood (salmon, crab, shrimps, calamari etc.) is really delicious. People who prefer meat can choose for pasta with different kinds of meat. You will be amazed how many different types of pasta and in different shapes you can find, for example Macaroni, Lasagna, Ravioli, Tagliatelli, penne, rigatoni, fettuccine etc. The art of preparing their pasta is the delicious sauce they can add and often they use tomatoes which tend to be much better than in most other countries of the world.

Most everyone will enjoy the delicious dessert on their vacation destination. Italy is famous for its ice-cream and probably one of the desserts which everyone likes. Savoring the gelato can be considered as a must if you make a trip to Italy. There are many travelers who choose Italy as travel destination especially for the delicious food and you can’t find one place on earth where you can eat ice-cream of this quality and you will find in almost every street at least one gelaterie. Ice-cream or gelato in Italy is always made of whole milk and probably the main reason why you can’t find the same quality in any other country of the world.

2. China

Chinese food is popular in every country of the world. China is an excellent travel destination for great food because most everyone enjoys the Chinese cuisine. You probably know the taste of many dishes in your hometown but if you make the trip to China you will notice that there is a great difference in taste. If you don’t live in Asia you will never have eaten rice of the same quality as in China. China has many rice fields and it is one of the main dishes of a typical Chinese meal.

There are different food styles in China and dependent which are in China you visit. Beijing is the perfect place to eat the Peking duck, Shanghai is famous for pork bun and Dim Sum is a popular dish is Southern China. Eating soup is also different in China; most Chinese restaurants serve soup after dinner. Only the Cantonese cuisine is different, they serve the soup like in most other countries of the world (before the meal).

There is a great variety of dishes in every part of meal but you will differences in the taste if you taste the same dish in different areas of China. It is also a nice experience to eat your food with shop sticks like Chinese people do. It can be difficult the first days but with some practice you will like to eat Chinese food without knife and fork. Chinese tea is really the best in the world, especially green tea and Jasmine tea. China is an excellent place for great food and most travelers consider the Chinese cuisine as one of the best in the world.

3. Norway

Norway is an excellent travel destination for great food if you like to eat fish. Salmon, crab, lobster, shrimps and any other kind of seafood is never better than in this Scandinavian country. You will find many restaurants which offer buffets with a variety of all kinds of fish and even if you take a cruise during your travel you will be amazed how excellent the fish you get on your dish taste.

Norway is a perfect travel destination if you like to eat healthy and you prefer fish instead of meat. It is possible to eat excellent meat in Norway but they are the experts of preparing all kinds of seafood. They use different cooking styles which we rarely use in other countries of the world.

There are many summer travel destinations for great food and it varies from person to person which country they prefer. Italy and China are probably the top countries for great food during your summer vacation but also France, Norway, Japan, India and even the Philippines are popular travel destinations for great food. France is popular for its food because the habitants can spend hours to enjoy their meal. Meat and vegetables are often fresh cooked and most everyone will enjoy a French meal with the excellent wine of this western country in Europe.

When you like to enjoy your summer vacation with excellent food you can best choose a vacation destination where you can find food which fits your preferences. If you don’t like spicy food you can best avoid tropical countries and maybe Italy, Norway or France are the best travel destinations for great food for you. In other circumstances you can choose for India, the Philippines, Mexico and some other tropical countries. Italy and China are excellent travel destinations for most everyone but it’s best to do a little bit research before you decide and you want to enjoy your meal on your travel destination.

When you visit a new land, eating its traditional foods is an easy way to know a little bit about local culture and some specialities. Therefore, it is said that food and travel go together like planes and airports. Here are eight countries where you can enjoy the most delicious dishes and find out interesting things about their cuisines.

Thailand

Located at the crossroads of India, China and Oceania, Thailand owns a unique cuisine that combines the best of all three cultures. Garlic and chillies are two common ingredients in Thai dishes. Other typical elements include lime juice, coriander and lemon grass, which offer Thai cuisine its characteristic tang.

Enjoying Thai cuisine is among common habits of travelers when visiting this country

Greece

Greece is famous for its true taste that depends on fresh and unadulterated staples from olives to octopus. Visitors can enjoy oven-fresh bread, rosy tomatoes or fish fresh from the Mediterranean without masking original flavors.

In Greece, each Wednesday and Friday are traditionally regarded as fast days or no-meat days

China

China has one of the world’s finest palates from small shops to five-star banquet halls and its cuisine perfectly matches with cultural precepts of Yin and Yang (balance and harmony). It means that menu for a day often includes cooling foods like vegetables and fruit to counter warming spices and meat.

Chinese people respect rice but also choose noodles as a main food

France

The French are well-known for their foodstuffs from cheese and champagne to snails and baguettes. Depending on distinct climate and geography, each region features a great variety of special specialities. The lunchtime is considered as the main meal of a day by many parts in this country.

A fully fledged home-cooked dinner consists of six distinct dishes

Spain

Saffron, cumin and honeyed sweets are major cooking flavor spices in regional Spanish cuisines including Barcelona. The area features a mixture of ingredients and traditional adds, in which seafoods and meat are in a rich array of sauces.

Dinner is the main event but never starts before 9pm in the country

Mexico

Influenced by Spanish, French and African cultures, the Mexican cuisine is varied and considers corn and bean as two prominent ingredients to process foods for daily meals and celebrations.

Enchiladas, tacos and quesadillas are traditional and famous dishes of this country

Indonesia & Malaysia

Indonesian and Malaysian cuisines are greatly influenced by Chinese, Portuguese, Indian colonists and traders from their ingredients to culinary concepts. The abundance of rice is characteristics of the region’s fertile terraced landscape. Though the cooking in two countries is not complex, its tastes still keep separate, simple and substantial.

The spices used for cooking are varied and typical, which reminds of a time of trade and invasion

Years ago it wasn’t all that unusual for people to build their own tractors out of old cars and junkyard scrap. Today many might scoff at the idea of building a tractor for home use when there are so many available commercially, but for those who are ambitious and mechanically inclined, building a tractor could be useful when it comes to yard maintenance, more economical then buying one, and it makes for a very interesting conversation piece.

Step One

Be honest with yourself when it comes to your mechanical skill and abilities. If you’re the sort of person who does all of your own car repairs and enjoys building, then you will probably be able to build a small tractor.

A person who needs a step by step guide to change his oil should not be attempting the project at all, leave it to the professionals.

Step Two

There are many free plans to buid your own tractor available on the internet. The term tractor can mean different things to different people however, for some it may be a large piece of machinery while others may think of a riding lawnmower as a type of tractor. There are even some plans for two wheeled push tractors which use small engines, such as a push lawnmower.

I’ve included a list of links to all sorts of home made tractors in the resources section of this article. All of these links take you to free tractor plans with no obligation to buy anything or even give out your email address. Some of the plans may be extremely difficult to use as they were created using car parts that would now be considered antiques.

Step Three

Get a friend to help you as some of the parts you’ll need to move in order to build your tractor are quite heavy. If you’re not a mechanic, then it’s probably a good idea to ask a friend who is to lend a hand. This will help immensely should any unanticipated problems arise.

Although Virginia, as an aviation destination, may seem a shadow of Washington with its world-reknowned National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, half of that magnificent facility actually sits in Virginia itself, and the state’s numerous other, although smaller, sights offer significant aviation focuses, from barnstorming airfields to space capsules.

The National Air and Space Museum’s second facility, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, is located in Chantilly, Virginia, next to Washington-Dulles International Airport. Constructed to preserve and display the remaining 80 percent of the aerospace collection too large and too numerous for either the existing structure on the National Mall or the Paul E. Garber Preservation and Restoration Facility in Suitland, Maryland, the modern, hangar-appearing building, named after International Lease and Finance Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Steven F. Udvar-Hazy in recognition of his million donation, had broken ground on October 25, 2000 when Hazy himself had turned the first shovel. The project, ultimately costing 1 million for design, site infrastructure, and building, and requiring a 600-strong construction team, had required some three years to complete before the first of several opening ceremonies could be held.

The first of these, amid the season’s first snowstorm, had taken place on December 3, 2003 and had entailed a special, pre-public “Appreciation Day” held for its sponsors, donors, and National Air and Space Society members. The event, precluded by a military ceremony of the Star Spangled Banner and a tributary speech by Museum Director General Jack Dailey, had entailed a day-long series of programs and the unveiling of many of the aircraft exhibited.

The other museum inaugurations, including the “Salute to Military Aviation Veterans,” the “Opening Celebration Gala,” and the “Museum Dedication,” had preceded the actual public opening, held on December 15, 2003, the centennial celebration of the Wright Brothers’ first powered, sustained, and controlled heavier-than-air flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Divided into two main areas, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center features a collection of 141 aircraft, 148 large space artifacts, and more than 1,500 smaller items. The first area, the Boeing Aviation Hangar, measures 986 feet long, 248 feet wide, and 103 feet high, and displays aircraft on three levels, while the second, the James S. McDonnell Hangar, is comparatively 262 feet long, 180 feet wide, and 80 feet high. The 164-foot-high Donald D. Engen Observation Tower overlooks Dulles International Airport and the 479-seat IMAX Theater completes the experience.

Exhibits are grouped in 16 broad categories: Vertical Flight, Sport Aviation, Business Aviation, Commercial Aviation, Pre-1920 Aviation, Korea and Vietnam, Cold War Aviation, Modern Military Aviation, Aerobatics, German World War II Aviation, Ultralights, Military Aviation: 1920-1940, Human Spaceflight, Space Science, Applications Satellites, and Rockets and Missiles.

Early aviation is represented by aircraft such as the Langley Aerodrome A, the Nieuport 28C-1, and the SPAD XVI, while World War II designs include the North American P-51C Mustang and the Boeing B-29 Superfortress “Enola Gay,” which had dropped the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, effectively ending the war. Naval aviation is represented by aircraft such as the Vought F4U-1D Corsair and the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat. Among the pure-jet fighters are the Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star, the McDonnell F-4S Phantom II, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, and the Grumman A-6B Intruder.

The museum’s transport category aircraft represent piston, pure-jet, subsonic, and supersonic designs, some of which are very rare, such as the German Focke-Wulfe Fw 190F, a quad-engined, tail-wheel aircraft which had application as an airliner; the German Junkers Ju 52/3m, with its three engines, corrugated metal airframe, and tail wheel; the Boeing B-307 Stratoliner “Flying Cloud,” the world’s first four-engined, pressurized passenger transport; the Lockheed L-1049H Constellation; the Boeing 367-80, the prototype of the Boeing 707; and the supersonic Concorde.

Supersonic military aviation is represented by the Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird.

The James S. McDonnell Hangar, whose centerpiece is the Space Shuttle Enterprise, features a rich collection of spacecraft, rockets, and satellites, among them the Gemini VII capsule, the Mariner 10, the Mercury Capsule 15B, a Redstone rocket, and the Mobile Quarantine Unit used after return of the Apollo 11 mission.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, together with the original National Air and Space Museum building on the National Mall, forms an integral part of the world’s largest aerospace museum.

Not all of Virginia’s aviation sights, however, encompass static displays housed in buildings.

The 200-acre Flying Circus Aerodrome, for instance, located in Bealeton, Virginia, and created in 1971, offers 1920s- and 1930s-era biplane air shows every Sunday from May to October reminiscent of the barnstorming days of aviation, billing itself as “the greatest show off earth.” Its fleet, which is mostly hangared at the nearby Warrenton Airport and flown in on weekends, includes enclosed Piper Cubs and open-cockpit N2S-1 and –3 Stearman, Waco, and Fleet biplanes, and is available for both straight-and-level and acrobatic rides of between 15 and 30 minutes before and after the shows.

After paying at the entrance booth, cars park on the grass behind the public area, which includes bench-type seats, Fifi’s Air Show Café for light fare, and a tiny, gray barn gift shop. A few hangars, located across the field and bearing red-and-white checkered roofs with names such as “Curtiss,” can also be visited.

The annual Air Show Program features many special event days, including antique cars, tractors, motorcycles, model airplanes, and hot air balloons.

Entrance immediately transports the visitor through a time portal to the barnstorming era.

A summer flight, aboard a Waco biplane, further returned me to this era. Unleashing itself over the grass with a full, 1,900-rpm throttle application, the aircraft, propelled by its single, uncowled engine, lifted its tail wheel off of the now blurred carpet of green and surrendered its two, fabric-covered wings into the sky at 70 mph.

Banking right to a 030-degree heading at 300 feet, it had settled into a 200 foot-per-minute climb in the hot, flawlessly-blue August sky over central Virginia’s rolling green canvas. Settling into its 600-foot aerial plateau, it cruised over light-green, velvet-appearing fields, bordered by dark green trees, which resembled modern geometric art patterns. Silver hay silos had triumphantly risen from them.

Commencing a series of figure-eights over rectangles of dry, almost-golden fields, whose plow marks appeared like textural brushstrokes, the biplane assumed a westerly heading toward the soft green ridges of Shenandoah National Park ahead of the blurred propeller, before initiating a much-too-soon, power-reduced sideslip over the ever-enlarging trees toward the field and gently settling on to the grass with its two main wheels.

The Virginia Aviation Museum, located closer to the eastern seaboard at Richmond International Airport, entices visitors with its outdoor Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and features 36 indoor historic, vintage, and reproduction aircraft, including the Wright Brothers’ kites, gliders, and 1903 Flyer; the Vultee V1-AD once owned by William Randolph Hearst; the Fairchild FC-2W2 Admiral Richard E. Byrd had used to overfly Antarctica; and a collection of piston and pure-jet engines. A full-size Piper J-3 Cub, which had recently been relocated from Science Museum of Virginia affiliate, permits examination of the four forces of flight, while several simulators and interactive exhibits explore aerodynamics.

Early aviation, the collection’s principle focus, includes several pristine-condition mono- and biplanes, such as a 1918 Standard E-1 Advanced Trainer, a 1917 SPAD VII fighter, the only known existing Wright Model A-14D Speedwig, a purpose-designed mail-carrying Pitcairn PA-5 Mailwing from 1927, a 1927 Travel Air 2000, a 1930 Fleet Model 1 military basic trainer, and a 1918 Curtiss JN-4D Jenny.

                Both piston and pure-jet engines include a Wright J-6 Whirlwind 5, a Curtiss OX-5, a 1914 Le Rhone 9C rotary engine, a Wright R-2600 Cyclone 14, a Pratt and Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major, a Continental A-65, a General Electric J-31, and a Pratt and Whitney J-58.

Dioramas depict World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen, and Women’s Airforce Service Pilots. Educational programs, catering to student, scout, and senior citizen groups, include lessons such as “The Wright Math,” “The Wright Path,” “Paper Airplane Workshop,” “Balloons and the Civil War in Virginia,” and “Seniors Discover the World of Aviation.”

Further south, in Hampton Roads, its outdoor Air Power Park, dedicated in recognition of the contributions made by NASA and Langley Air Force Base to aerial and space development and for their interest in community endeavors, include several unique aircraft designs, inclusive of the Lockheed T-33A T-Bird, an A-7E Corsair II, an XV-6A Kestrel V/STOL, a North American F-86L Sabre, the later-developed North American Rockwell F-100D Super Sabre, a McDonnell F-101F Voodoo, a Northrop F-89J Scorpion, and a Republic Aviation F-105D Thunderchief. Even rarer, perhaps, is its space-related collection, including an SM-78 Jupiter surface-to-surface intermediate-range ballistic missile, a Western Electric NIM-14 Nike-Hercules two-stage missile, a Jet Propulsion Lab M-2 Corporal Ballistic Missile, a North American Aviation Mercury/Little Joe Booster, and a Mercury Test Capsule.

The Virginia Air and Space Center, located in downtown Hampton on the waterfront, is a million, 110,000 square foot, nine-story facility which had opened on April 5, 1992 and is characterized by its futuristic, interconnected, dual-building, gull wing roof-resembling architecture. Its more than 30 historic air- and spacecraft, which represent more than 100 years of flight, are exhibited in the recently completed, million Adventures in Flight Gallery and the Space Gallery, and include such designs as the Apollo 12 Command Module which had made the journey to the Moon, an AirTran DC-9-30, a B-24 Liberator nose section, an F.84 Thunderstreak, an F-4E Phantom II, an N2S-3 Stearman, a Lunar Orbiter, an F-104 Starfighter, an F-106 Delta Dart, a YF-16 Fighting Falcon, and a P-39Q Aircobra. A new exhibit, “Space Quest: Exploring the Moon, Mars, and Beyond,” had recently been introduced in the Space Gallery. Extensive, hands-on exhibits, featuring hot air balloons, noise abatement, a Boeing 717 glass cockpit fight simulator, aircraft flight surfaces, propeller efficiency comparatives, and Space Shuttle landing simulators, are complemented by the Riverside IMAX and Curtiss Jenny Century of Flight Theaters.

The Virginia Air and Space Center depicts a timeline of Virginia aviation achievements. The first-ever captive balloon ascent from a ship, for example, a Union Army vessel anchored at Hampton Roads, had occurred in 1861, and Eugene Ely had become the first to take off from what had been considered the first aircraft carrier, the USS Birmingham, anchored nearby, in 1910. The Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, the predecessor of NASA Langley, had been established. In 1927, the USS Langley, a converted collier, had been commissioned as the US Navy’s first aircraft carrier. In 1931, NACA Langley had opened the world’s first full-scale wind tunnel capable of testing full-size aircraft at speeds of up to 118 mph. In 1934, the Newport News Shipyard had constructed the first purpose-built aircraft carrier, the USS Ranger. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) had become the National Air and Space Association (NASA) in 1958 and America’s first astronauts, the Mercury Seven, had trained at the NASA Langley Research Center. The United States’ first transonic wind tunnel had opened at NASA Langley in 1982.

The museum also serves as both the Visitor Center for the NASA Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base. Four miles north of the museum, the US Army had purchased land in December of 1916 in order to construct, in cooperation with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, an airfield. The Army had subsequently trained crews and tested aircraft there during World War I. In 1921, Brigadier General William “Billy” Mitchell had led bombing trials from Langley to demonstrate the feasibility of air patrol and its effectiveness in destroying battleships. Major General Frank Andrews later led a combat air command, which became the forerunner of the Army Air Forces of WWII and ultimately evolved into today’s US Air Force.

Virginia, although initially perceived as a shadow of Washington with its Smithsonian Institution on the National Mall, is a relatively small state which offers a long, multi-faceted aviation journey.

The owner of an antique car need to find an antique auto insurance. Actually, for that car, one has spent a lot of time, money, and effort into restoring their prized possession. With antique car insurance, the underwriting process differs from that of modern vehicles.

If you are looking to guard your precious investment, then it is vital that you select an insurance carrier that specializes in antique car insurance. Such an insurance carrier is going to require a motorist to adhere to stringent guidelines in order to ensure your automobile is well taken care of. For example, you may be required to store your automobile in a covered and locked garage when it is not being driven.

Many insurance companies for antique cars will refuse to pay for a claim if the vehicle is left unattended in an open air parking lot.

Taking meticulous care of your vehicle will give an insurance company the confidence to extend a discount to you on your classic car insurance policy. When it comes time for you to purchase a car insurance policy for your classic automobile, your insurance provider and yourself will have to agree upon a market value for the vehicle. This monetary amount will be the money that your insurance company will reimburse you if the car is stolen or destroyed. Each year when you renew your policy, the value of the car will be reexamined for appreciation or depreciation. Because the value of a classic automobile is significantly higher than a late model vehicle, your monthly insurance premiums will reflect this fact.

Before you select a company to conduct a business relationship with, be certain to carefully review the services and tools that they offer to their members.

For example, a reputable classic car insurance company should offer its members a towing and labor plan for collectors. This is a comprehensive plan that provides reimbursement for expenses that are not routinely covered by your insurance policy, such as emergency travel and car show expenses. Furthermore, a reputable antique auto insurance company should have an excellent reputation for customer service.

Q: You and your sister, Maxine, made five singles for the Fabor label in 1954-55. In one session, Jim Reeves was featured on the rhythm guitar and Floyd Cramer on the piano. Did anyone have any idea back then how successful all of you would become?

Brown: “No. Jim and Floyd played on the ‘Looking Back to See’ session.”

Q: You have recorded and written many songs through the years. What are your favorites?

Brown: “I could not name just one.”

Q: You have made many TV appearances through the years. Are there any that stand out as truly memorable?

Brown: “The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, Ozark Jubilee, Nashville on the Road, etc.”

Q: Who are your favorite performers in the country music field?

Brown: “Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Chet Atkins.”

Q: Did you have any particular brand of beer in mind when you first made your 1967 drinking hit “Pop-A-Top?”

Brown: “We used a Dr. Pepper can!”

Q: Did your cheek ever become sore from making that pop sound for the song?

Brown: “No, it’s not sore yet.”

Q: Do you sign autographs via the mail? Do you limit the number of items per person?

Brown: “No, I don’t limit the numbers and I do sign.”

Q: Are there any items you refuse to sign?
